General Notes: Wife -

QUINN CEMETERY.
3/8/1996 LTR FROM HAZEL RIN=2151
LAST UPDATED 3/8/1996
4/5/1996 LTR FROM DEAN PRATT RIN=2124 SENDS OPAL CAMERON'S WORK SAYING DEORAH BURRIED IN QUINN CEMETERY 2 1/2 MILES SW OF SHANNON, IA 3/26/2001 WENT TO SHELBY COUNTY INDIANA LIBRARY TO LOOK UP RECORDS ..FOUND IN SHELBY COUNTY COURT RECORDS INDEX OF 1822-1862 PAGE 78, MENTIONS DEBORAH AND JOSEPH QUINN IN THE PETITION TO SELL REAL ESTATE OF DEBORAH'S FATHER GARRET HARSIN. PAGE 220 OF BOOK D (1847-1849).
3/29.2001 FROM PHYLLIS QUINN , SAYS DEBORAH AND JOSEPH QUINN LIVED IN CIRCLEVILLE, OHIO AND THEN MOVED TO SHELBYVILLE, INDIANA.

"WHEN JOSEPH
AND DEBORAH QUINN AND THEIR FAMILY CAME TO RINGGOLD COUNTY(IA) IT WAS A WILD COUNTRY IN HABITED BY WILD ANIMALS. A GOODLY NUMBER OF INDIANS LIVED HERE. JOSEPH QUINN, SON OF SAMUEL AND MARY QUINN, WAS BORN IN VA IN 1799. HE MARRIED WIDOW, DEORAH HARRSIN (HARSIN) DEMINT IN KENTUCKY ON APRIL 26, 1826. THIS FAMILY LIVED IN OHIO AND INDIANA BEFORE COMING TO IOWA IN 1854. BY THIS TIME, THEIR OLDER DAUGHTERS WERE MARRIED. ELIZABETH AND MARIA AND THEIR FAMILIES ALSO CAME TO IOWA.
DEBORAH HAD A COLORFUL PAST. THERE IS A QUESTION ABOUT THE FAMILY NAME, IT SEEMS THAT IT WAS CHANGED FROM HARRISON TO HARSIN AND IS STILL DEBATED AS TO WHY AND WHEN IT WAS CHANGED. (THERE IS PROOF OF THE HARSIN NAME ON THE PROBATE RECORDS OF SHELBY CO.,IND, WHERE IT LISTS JOSEPH QUINN AND DEBORAH QUINN AS HEIRS OF GARRET AND ELIZABETH HARSIN) DEBORAH ONLY HAD THE NAME A SHORT TIME, AS SHE MARRIED SAMUEL DEMENT, A METHODIST CIRCUIT RIDER AT THE AGE OF 13. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN BEFORE HE DIED WHILE MAKING HIS ROUNDS FROM CHURCH TO CHURCH. WHEN DEBORAH WAS 30, SHE MARRIED JOSEPH QUINN AND THEY HAD 7 CHILDREN. THEIR HOME IN IOWA WAS A LOG CABIN. IN THE FALL OF 1784, DEBORAH DIED AND WAS BURRIED IN THE QUINN CEMETERY LOCATED ON THE WM KNIGHT QUINN FARM.
ALLIE MAY RAY, A GRANDDAUGHTER, LIVED NEARBY AND MADE THIS STATEMENT ABOUT DEBORAH. "GRANDMOTHER QUINN WAS A NOBLE SAINT WHO WAS A BULWARK OF THE FAMILY, THE QUALITY, THE SOLID FOUNDATION OF HIGH PRINCIPLE AND INTEGRITY. HER GREATNESS OF CHARACTER IS A LEGEND AMONG ALL HER DESCENDANTS." TAKEN FROM: THE DIAGONAL, IOWA CENTENNIAL HISTORY BOOK.
